Representation Question

In year 12 I created a Sci-Fi Thriller hybrid film opening called the Ez Life. We used representation to help our audience relate to the meaning. For example at first we had to find out genre conventions. We did this by researching similar films to the one that we wanted to create such as Project X.

Our film opening was non-linear, we used transitions to show a change in time periods. This was so that we could give away more narrative in the opening. This helped us use enigma codes to keep our audience interested. For example we used many different camera angles and shots to keep the opening fast paced and interesting.

Q1a: Understanding of conventions

Explain how far your understanding of the conventions of existing media influenced the way you created your own media products. Refer to a range of examples in your answer to show how this understanding developed over time.

In our preliminary task for AS we made a comedy film, Sweet Potato. This was made after we researched titles on a website called art of the title. This influenced the way we created our media product, Sweet Potato, as before this I had little knowledge of the conventions of titles in films. I also did not know that different genres used titles in different ways. So in this aspect Art of the Title was a huge part of my research for our film opening task.

Also to research our preliminary task, Sweet Potato, we looked at comedy films openings to identify any title conventions and to see how much narrative was given away in the opening. In our preliminary task our research consisted of watching other film openings. This improved massively in the time between our preliminary task and our final product, The EZ Life. At first we just watched the titles and tried to see if they were any similarities in the titles. Whereas for our opening the EZ Life we analysed titles thoroughly. I used software called time toast to make a timeline of the titles  this meant we could analyse the tiles in much more detail and resulted in me seeing a lot more conventions than we noticed for our preliminary task.

Timetoast was easy to use as I had experience with it before to make timelines for History but I had not used some of the advanced features such as timing the presentation before.

Q1A (Research and Planning)

Explain how your research and planning skills developed over time and how those decisions contributed to your media productions outcomes. Refer to a range of examples in your answer.

In year 12 we made a film opening, ‘The eZ Life’ and in Year 13 we created a promotional campaign for our artist iSO. This was a music video supported by a website and a digipak. As a digital native I was used to consuming products like music videos and websites but had little experience of research and planning before.

My research in year 12 consisted of secondary research. Researching my genre and conventions for the film opening. As I had little experience in year 12 I did not do a great deal of primary research. However in Year 13 with my skills having developed I used primary research a lot more. Software like survey monkey to gain feedback on my productions which I believe made my productions much better after acting on valuable feedback.

Secondary research was still important in Year 13 as to conform to Hip Hop genre conventions I had to research other artist’s products like digipak and music videos. This research was vital, in that, without it our music video would not have conformed to Hip Hop conventions. But research was also very important to create the website as I had very little idea of what other Hip Hop artist websites looked like and what their purpose was.

My primary research largely consisted of using survey monkey for both AS and A2. However my primary research improved from AS to A2 which resulted in better products. For example at AS I used survey monkey for audience feedback on my film opening. I got about fifteen responses which was not really enough to gain a great deal of constructive feedback. Although survey monkey contained tutorials on how to use it which made it relatively easy to use my questions were not great, which limited the use of the responses. However at A2 I made much more direct questions with selected responses so all of the answers were relevant and I amassed over sixty responses which meant the feedback was much better and more detailed.

I also used Quicktime survey at A2 as I found that survey monkey did not include all the features I wanted. Quicktime surveys allowed me to present information much more effectively and meant it reduced the time it took to sort through all of the data which allowed me more time to partake in creative actions like editing and filming.

Overall I feel like my research and planning skills were good at the start but have still massively improved throughout my Media Studies. Especially my primary research skills which improved massively throughout the last two years.

Analysing in relation to audience:

Introduction

Think about:
Who did we target?
In what ways did we attract our audience?
And what was our audience feedback?
How did we know ant audience wanted what research did we do?

Cross promotional package:
Digipak
Music video
Website
In essence an advertising campaign has to be targeted to a specific audience

Who was audience in terms of:
  • Age
  • hobby
  • interests
Describe their profile (job and interests)

How did you attract or interest audience find specific things from camera mise en scene camera editing and sound how did it attract audience
How much were we trying to please audience
